Do you, or does someone you know feel more than a twinge after going without internet access too long? Do you count “too long” in terms of just minutes?
If so, you’re not alone, according to this blog post.
For better or worse, for many marketers, this represents and opportunity too good to pass up.
In tandem with this, also for better or worse, Facebook seems intent on sharing an increasing amount of personal information with marketers. Beyond that, the safety and security of personal information faces increasing threats.
You might be surprised to find that Facebook mines data about the websites you visit, who your friends are, and your friends’ behavior online. This information is becoming available though application interfaces that will be available to marketers.
Best Practice Recommendation:
Approaching new clients/customers based on mining data of online activity, without the client’s knowledge is a poor approach. Electronic marketing should be sent only if the customer has expressly indicated an interest in your company and/or its products or services.
Still, demographics, relevancy and targeting are more important than ever. Use organic search, keyword marketing, direct mail and other proven, non invasive channels to reach the marketplace.
