A radio show I follow, This American Life, recently featured a story about one man’s icebreaker at cocktail parties. Instead of asking, “what do you do for a living?” or such, he poses the following question:
“If you could choose between having the power of invisibility or the ability to fly, which would you choose?”
Fascinating conversations would always ensue. The radio show is great, and you can listen to it here in podcast form. Hearing the show got me thinking about marketer and author Seth Godin’s now famous question, “what is your Superpower?”
A Superpower isn’t a niche, USP, market position or story. Instead it relates to your own inner genius, your art, what you bring to the table to help your customers. Yes, I believe we each have an inner genius though sometimes it takes a bit of x-ray vision to find it. In fact, that’s my superpower.
Next time you make an elevator speech, don’t say “I’m Bob, and I sell employee benefits for small and medium size companies.” Snore. Instead, talk about your Superpower. That way, I know how you can help me (and vice versa).
Without a Superpower, you’d have to compete in the marketplace as a plain old, regular person. Your Superpower is at the core of what can make your business more successful. So why keep it a secret?
